Sittin' man on stage, heard him on the radio Don't you know his age, man don't the time move slow He's living 50 songs And his hair's grown real long, mhm He taught it to his mother, and his paw and his brothers Take every breathe you can, shy away from the man He's lookin' pretty bad And his songs are all real sad, mhm He's got two more shows, 'till he gets back on the road Travels all alone, on the road he calls home Should've took a chance Yeah, at least for a while, mhm

about

Hibbs Family Band’s debut album, Tears in Missouri was released May 1, 2020. Hibbs Family Band is a quartet of family members out of Athens, Georgia that combines the textures and rhythms of bluegrass and folk music with alt-rock melodic sensibilities and lyricism. Rob and Garrett Hibbs, guitarists and bassist of local rock band, Georgia Dish Boys, join parents, Henry and Judy Hibbs on fiddle and piano to form Hibbs Family Band. Ashley Na, a songwriter and cellist out of Athens is featured during each studio track on the album. The soothing harmonies between the fiddle and cello throughout the album compliment the emotional spirit of the lyrics.

The Hibbs family has been playing music together in their living room ever since Garrett and Rob were kids and learning how to play instruments. The Hibbs have a long line of fiddle players in the family that date back several generations. On occasions, Henry will play an old black fiddle from the 1800’s that was handed down as a family heirloom and played by Hibbs’ great grandfather, Asa Straight.

The album was mixed by Tyler Key and mastered by Joel Hatstat and is a mixture of studio recordings from local studio, Full Moon in Watkinsville, GA as well as recordings from the Hibbs’ living room, recorded by Tyler Key and also live recordings from a show at The Foundry in Athens recorded by Sloan Simpson.

The title track, Tears in Missouri, is a song romanticizing the Hibbs’ experiences at their family farm in Yarrow, Missouri. The song tells stories about family history and cherished times of gatherings. The Hibbs' travel to Missouri often to visit with their aunt, Clara Straight who is 100 years old and a renowned local artist and painter. The song starts off with a gentle instrumental duet from violinist and pianist, Henry and Judy Hibbs.

The album opens with a song titled, Living 50 Songs, which is an ode to local Athens friends and traveling musicians who write and play songs about their own lives while staying true to their passion, having low expectations for monetary payouts and high expectations for making art. Living 50 Songs will be released as a single February 28th.

The Jaw Harp is featured on track 3, Breaking the Daylight, which is a handed down instrument from Hibbs’ Uncle, Paul Straight who is pictured on the inside cover of the album playing on the farm in Missouri years back. Haunting acappella lyrics lay over the droning rhythm of the harp.

The track, Uncle Walter is a recording of the Hibbs’ late Uncle Walter who served in World War II and sang in a gospel quartet as a young man. Walter Straight recites an Edgar Guest poem, titled Your Name, a homage to family and handed down tradition.

The track that follows, A Straight Story, references the Hibbs’ experiences with Walter Straight and his four siblings, Ruth, Clara, Paul and John. The last phrase in the song sums up the theme of the album. Hibbs sings, “Grandma, grandma. I never met you, but I know I love you. You really inspire a lot of people you’ve never met.” The Hibbs’ grandma, Ruth Straight Hibbs was a gifted painter. Sisters, Clara and Ruth shared careers as art professors at Cornell University. Ruth painted the watercolor painting that will be used as the Hibbs Family Band’s album cover. The painting is of three fiddlers, one of which is Garrett and Rob’s father, Henry at 10 years old, learning fiddle licks from a neighbor.
